‘MFA Photo Show 14’
University of Ulster, MFA Photography, Graduate Exhibition 2014.
This exhibition showcases the work of fifteen graduates from the 2014 MFA Photography program. The MFA program was established by Paul Seawright at the Belfast School of Art in 2010 and has quickly gained a reputation for turning out compelling and engaging work, elevating the status of Irish photography both at home and abroad. As the only MFA Photography course in Ireland, now with two Magnum photographers as tutors, it attracts students from all corners of the country and the world.
The work on show is a cross section of fifteen individual projects, all the result of a long engagement with self and subject. The aim of each photographer was to produce an original body of work, ie. work that originated within themselves.
The themes presented range from rave culture to shamanism to post boom Ireland, exploring ideas about memory, identity and home. The subjects and the approaches reflect the character, sensibilities and concerns of each individual photographer. After all, cannot all photography be said to be a self-portrait?
